Why Is Boron So Good At Absorbing Neutrons

10/1/2015  · It’s boron-10 that is the good neutron absorber. Boron-11 has a low cross section for neutron absorption. The size of the nucleus isn’t terribly relevant because neutrons are quantum objects and don’t have a precise position . The incident neutron will be delocalised and some part of it will almost always overlap the nucleus.

The desire to further increase neutron absorption by increasing boron levels to 2 percent or more further added to processing difficulties.

Natural boron consists primarily of two stable isotopes, 11 B (80.1%) and 10B (19.9%) . In nuclear industry boron is commonly used as a neutron absorber due to the high neutron cross-section of isotope 10B. Its (n,alpha) reaction cross-section for thermal neutrons is.

Hydrogen has a small chance of absorbing them, but for water shields it’s best to mix in boron because of its large absorption probability. Boron also has interesting fusion aspects, so maybe it can plausibly mix with your fuel. But if not, put a few cm as a shield wall.

“ Boron 11” is the isotope of Boron where the mass of the nucleus is ~11 mass units, which means that the sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus is 11. Since the number of protons is 5 and the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons is 11, the number of neutrons in each nucleus must be 6.

It has a rather small probability for absorbing a neutron, so it is not in itself a significant factor in the reaction rate control. But it has a half-life of about 6.7 hours and decays into xenon-135 (half-life 9.2 hours). The xenon-135 has a very large cross-section for neutron absorption , about 3 million barns under reactor conditions! This compares to 400-600 barns for the uranium fission event.

Once the neutrons reach the lower energy states they can be absorbed giving off a capture gamma and boron is usually used for this absorbtion. So borated water is a good neutron shield and so are some Polyethylene types. You can get the polyethylene in a type that is actually impregnated with boron specifically for shielding use.
